May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global initiative by the International Society of Hypertension and the World Hypertension League to raise awareness of high blood pressure.Held annually during May (often extending to July), it offers free screenings (sometimes called #TheBigSqueeze) to identify untreated hypertension, which is a leading risk factor for stroke and heart disease.

Since 2017, the campaign has aimed to increase awareness of high blood pressure, especially since many people are unaware of their condition. Volunteers screen adults (aged 18+) for blood pressure in communities, offices, and clinics, with screenings often continuing until July.

Since its launch, over 6 million people have been screened in over 100 countries, identifying over 1 million individuals with untreated hypertension. You can get a free blood pressure check at many participating sites. In Australia, Hypertension Australia supports the campaign and suggests pharmacy checks.

The initiative recommends resting for 5 minutes before a measurement, sitting with back support, legs uncrossed, and not talking during the check. High blood pressure is a significant factor in serious illnesses, including heart attacks and strokes, making these check-ups crucial for prevention.
