The Mullumbimby District Neighbourhood Centre has been creating a bush tucker garden in the grounds of the building in Dalley Street for many years. Work started with committed community members many years ago and is now getting a new lease of life. The aim is to identify all the existing plants, name them and link them through a QR Code to the website where more information can be found on their uses and cultural requirements.
Other bush tucker plants that are too large to plant in this area can be catalogued and directions given as to the location of these plants in the area so people can look at the plants and glean the food where appropriate. They may wish to plant these plants on their own properties for future generations.
It is hoped that more plants can be added to the collection and that anyone with knowledge of bush tucker botanical names and uses will come forward and assist in this community project.
Bush tucker is a wonderful resource for our community. Medicinal food can be accessed by everyone with the guidance of our indigenous brothers and sisters. We can work together to create real food security for our region.
