March 21st World Down Syndrome Day
The World Down Syndrome Day website and associated activities are coordinated by Down Syndrome International, the global network of people with Down syndrome and their families.
The DSi Network includes 150+ organisation members from all world regions, representing the Down syndrome community in their country.
We speak up and take action, together as a network, for the human rights of all people with Down syndrome.
All around the world, Down syndrome organisations are preparing to take action on 21 March. We encourage you to connect with the Down syndrome community in your part of the world and learn how you can support local action.
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed every year on March 21
Why March 21?
The date (21/3) symbolises ‘Trisomy 21’ — the medical term for Down syndrome, which occurs when a person has three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two.
What Is It About?
It’s a global awareness day to:
* Celebrate people with Down syndrome
* Promote inclusion and equal rights
* Raise awareness about abilities, not limitations
* Advocate for education, employment and healthcare access
The day is officially recognised by the United Nations.
Why the Colourful Socks?
You’ll often see people wearing bright, mismatched socks.
This is part of the “Lots of Socks”*campaign — socks are chosen because chromosomes look a bit like socks under a microscope.
It’s a simple, visible way to start conversations about diversity and inclusion.
How It’s Celebrated
* School awareness activities
* Community events
* Social media campaigns
* Fundraising for Down syndrome organisations
* Advocacy events at the UN
